Japan Autumn Nov 2017 一人で日本の旅 - Unoshima Villa 日立・太田尻海岸 うのしまヴィラ

Stayed 10.11.2017 (Fri)
Booked thru ikyu.com
Single: 19,995 yen (half board)

Feeling of home. To facilitate my visit to Hananuki Gorge / Hananuki Keikou (花貫渓谷) in Takahagi on a morning, I decided to stay in a nearby accommodation the night before. The first one which caught my attention was Unomisaki 鵜の岬 located along the coastline facing Pacific Ocean. Later I found out that this lodging has an impressive track record of emerging top out of all Kokumin Shukusha (国民宿舎) in Japan, in terms of occupancy rate, for 27 consecutive years. However, this hotel only accepts reservation through phone which kind of deter me away. Continued my search and stumbled upon Unoshima Villa in ikyu.com. Sound strange, but I will have to call this "love at first sight" as the outlook of this seaside accommodation looks so comfy and scenic to my liking. Without further ado, I proceeded to make my reservation online and was looking forward to my stay in Unoshima Villa at the halfway mark of my holidays.

Private beach, sunrise and star gazing! Arrived at Unoshima Villa just before sunset and was instantly welcomed by a cooling sea breeze. Before heading into the main building to check in, I decided to spend some time admiring the remaining moment of sunset at the beach. Comprised of two buildings - the main one is where the front desk, Sea-ne シーネ restaurant and communal bathhouse are housed in, while the guestrooms are located separately in an adjacent two storey lodging building. Unoshima Villa was formerly known as Unoshima Onsen Ryokan which was heavily destroyed by the tsunami as a result of Mar 2011 Tohoku Earthquake. 2/3 of the existing premises were tore down and the remaining building structures were refurbished for re-opening in Apr 2014. Being strategically located near the seaside, Unoshima Villa naturally has it own private beach and promises a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean all year long. On a clear day, guests should wake up slightly earlier than usual to catch the sun surfacing from the horizon. Unfortunately, I was not granted that spectacular moment as it was rather cloudy when I woke up in the morning. However, I was already very contented to stumble upon a star glittering sky on the night of my stay! In Singapore, star gazing with bare eyes is always a feat due to light interference from the ground. Therefore, it was considered a rare experience for me to witness a star filled sky and its beauty is truly beyond words to describe.

Room and facilities. Unoshima Villa is a small scale accommodation with a capacity of only seven rooms. As I happened to be the only guest, I could have the restaurant and communal bathhouse all to myself during my stay! The room assigned to me was a spacious Japanese style tatami laid room which came with an unobstructed sea view, located on the second floor of the lodging building. There are a total of three such similar rooms and they are not equipped with toilet and showering facilities. Guests will have to utilise the common toilet and shower rooms located on the same floor. There are also coin operated washing and drying machines made conveniently available at the ground level of the lodging building.

The communal bathhouse, separated by gender, is located on the second floor of the main building and only indoor facility is available. Though the source of the water in the bathhouse is not from a hot spring source, soaking into this temperature regulated water after a bath helps to wear down the tiredness accumulated over the trip. If you are taking a soak in the morning, do keep a lookout for the sea view from the bathroom which becomes visible in the day. In the rest area located just outside the communal bathhouse, there are bookshelves filled with photography books and travel guidebooks for guests to refer to while chilling/cooling down. From a design perspective, the modern style wood house with alike interior furnishing created this comfortable ambience for guests to relax in and the design was something I will love to have it in my own house!

Admiring this beautifully prepared tray of appetiser.
Maguro carpaccio served with fresh greens and Hishio.
Impressed by this Hitachi-gyu steak!
Thumb-up. Meals were the highlight of my stay in Unoshima Villa. Love both meals were served in Sea-ne restaurant and were prepared with care by the owner, Mr and Mrs Harada-san. Utilising locally produced ingredients, the couple aimed to create local cuisine with a touch of novelty and most importantly, beneficial to health. From plating to the choice of ingredients employed to prepare the entire meal course, and the meticulous explanation by Mr Harada-san on each and every dishes placed in front of me, I can strongly feel the immense effort put in to attain their desired objective.

Dinner commenced with a beautifully plated appetiser served on a wooden tray - a modern interpretation of a hassun (八寸) utilising ingredients harvested from the land, mountain and sea. Next was maguro carpaccio, accompanied with fresh greens and Hishio, a traditional Japanese fermented seasoning. The maguro was perfectly seared on the outside with the dark red meat still intact, and such cooking style reminded me of tataki maguro. This was followed by a rich and flavourful cup of pumpkin soup, piping hot, crunchy tempura of assorted seasonal vegetables and cold udon made from moroheiya, a type of wild vegetable known for its high nutritious value and grown locally in Mito, served with dashi. Main course was Hitachi-gyu steak drizzled with Hishio. When Harada-san came by to ask me how the beef was, I could only compliment him with a gesture of thumb-up. Hitachi-gyu is the pride of Ibaraki Prefecture and are only harvested from Japanese black cattle raised for more than 30 months. The marbled meat is known for its tenderness and rich flavours and I could fully relate to this claim after savouring this well-executed piece of steak. The penultimate dish was rice flavoured with mushrooms. Knowing that I was already quite full up, Harada-san proposed to make onigri from the remaining rice for me to take away. The onigri, despite cold, still tasted nice and moist when I had it in the afternoon while onboard the train.

Luxury. Breakfast was yet another luxurious moment for me as the restaurant overlooked the beach and Pacific Ocean with sun rays pouring through the glass panels into the room. Reverting to a more Japanese style breakfast accompanied by a panoramic sea view, my pace of eating automatically slowed down and my appetite grew as I requested for another bowl of fragrant rice! It was a moment I wished that time can stand still and I could prolong my extraordinary experience at Unoshima Villa. One most important attribute to this wonderful stay was the warm and immaculate hospitality displayed by both Mr and Mrs Harada-san throughout my entire stay, which today, still remained vividly in my mind. 本当にありがとうございました。

In short, the feeling of home comes naturally right from the first moment you step onto the grounds of Unoshima Villa, a phenomenon which I have not felt strongly from my past travelling experiences in Japan. A place I would highly recommend all to stop by, even for a simple meal, when you come to Hitachi city.

Japan Autumn Nov 2017 一人で日本の旅 - Bitchu Takahashi JR Station 備中高梁駅, Takahashi City Library 高梁市図書館

Bitchu Takahashi JR Station 備中高梁駅, located in Okayama Prefecture, is a train station on Hakubi line (伯備線). The most symbolic landmark of Takahashi city is undoubtedly Bicchu Matsuyama Castle 備中松山城, one of the rare mountain castles in Japan. Having said that, the initial pulling factor for me to visit this city located northwest of Okayama city, was not the historic castle but its train station!

Limited express trains serving this train station include:
(1) Ltd Exp Yakumo やくも, commutes along Hakubin line and San'in main line, between Okayama and Izumo. The train ride takes slightly over 30 minutes from Okayama to Bitchu Takahashi.
(2) Ltd Exp Sunrise Izumo サンライズ出雲, an overnight sleeper train which commutes between Tokyo and Izumo.

What's nearby?

(1) Takahashi City Library 高梁市図書館, located within the train station.
Opening hrs: 0900 - 2100 hrs

Objective achieved! The library building was the aim of my visit to Takahashi city. Caught sight of this modern looking building which stood out in the suburb while I was on board Limited Express Yakumo. Started to research on the name of this train station and eventually made up my mind to pay this place a visit just before heading back to Singapore. The library spans over three storey and is connected seamlessly to the train station. Upon entering the library, you will first see the tourist information center on the left and Starbucks on the right. Love the overall outlook of the library - the spacious concept creates a conducive environment for spending an entire day here reading a favourite book. For those who have been to Takeo City Library 武雄市図書館 in Saga Prefecture, this place will breed familiarity. In fact, Takahashi City Library was a collaboration between Takahashi City and Culture Convenience Club Company (known as CCC in short), the same company behind the successful revamp of Takeo City Library.

(2) Tsutaya 蔦屋 and Starbucks スターバックス, located within the train station.
A section of the library is dedicated to Tsutaya, a local bookstore chain managed by CCC, and Starbucks. What I like most about the overall design of the library, bookstore, cafe and tourist information center is its open concept in which the various sections are not separated by dividers/walls, therefore promoting collaboration. One of the most appealing design which has become the center of attraction in this building is the towering wall bookshelves in the dining area - you cannot help but want to take a photo of this spot before heading further into the library!

(3) Tourist Information Center 高梁市観光案内所, located within the train station.

Opening hrs: 0900 - 1700 hrs

Group taxi. There is an affordable and convenient group taxi service which tourists can make use to visit Bitchu Matsuyama Castle. For a one way fee of 500 yen, the taxi departs from the train station to Fuigo toge ふいご峠 and it takes another 25 minutes walk to reach the Tenshukaku (keep tower) of Bitchu Matsuyama Castle. However, a prior reservation via phone call is required/recommended to secure this service. I tried my luck to make a reservation on the spot and fortunately was able to get the earliest 0950 hrs slot. Similarly, I utilised the same taxi service which departed at 1140 hrs from Fuigotoke to return to the train station.
  • Bitchu Takahashi JR Station > Fuigo toge: 0950, 1120, 1250, 1420 hrs
  • Fuigo toge > Bitchu Takahashi JR Station: 1140, 1310, 1440, 1610 hrs
Another popular activity here is Unkai 雲海 (or sea of clouds) viewing of Bitchu Matsuyama Castle. A similar group taxi service is available between October and March to ferry visitors from the train station to Unkai Observatory 雲海展望台. Cost 1,500 yen for a round trip, there are two available timing per day (0730 and 0800 hrs) during its operational period and prior reservation is also required to utilise this service.

(4) Raikyuji 頼久寺, about 15 mins walk from the train station.

Japan Autumn Nov 2017 一人で日本の旅 - Raikuji 頼久寺

Visited 20.11.2017 (Mon)

Origin. After visiting Bicchu Matauyama Castle, I requested to be dropped off at Raikyuji on the return journey back to Bicchu Takahashi Station 備中高梁駅. The origin of Raikyuji traces all the way back to the 14th century. Though the exact date when Raikyuji was built is not particularly clear, it was known to belong to Eigenji, one of 14 autonomous branches of the Rinzai school of Japanese Zen Buddhism. It was rebuilt in 1339 by Ashikaga Takauji 足利尊氏, the first shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate (1336–1573) and the temple was named Ankokuji 安国寺. In 1504, Ueno Yorihisa (Raikyu), the lord of Bicchu Matsuyama Castle, renewed the exterior of the temple. After his death, the temple was renamed Ankoku Raikyuji in honour of him.

Zen. When I first saw the photos depicting the garden in Raikyuji online, I knew I have to pay this place a visit. Even though the garden only occupies a small section of the entire compound, it is a true gem of the temple. For me, I spent most of my stay here sitting at the edge of the porch, admiring this immaculate landscape while sorting out my thoughts and reviving the inner balance in me. In fact, the therapeutic effect derived from viewing at such harmonised scenery has always been recognised by people of the past. Such landscape of the garden is known as "Horai" style which means spiritual peacefulness and harmony is derived when viewing it. This elegantly composed rock garden comprised of two low hills of stones protruding out from the beautifully raked sand covered ground which represent the water ripples. The well pruned bushes of azalea on the left side represents the undulating waves in the sea. The time of my visit was also just right as the garden was already decorated by some autumn foliage, a scene that is unique to this season. All in all, Raikyuji is definitely an attractive place worthy of a visit in Takahashi city.

Japan Autumn Nov 2017 一人で日本の旅 - Hitachi JR Station 日立駅

Award winning. When I arrived at Hitachi JR Station, I was surprised by the modern appearance and novel outlook of the train station! The train station was designed by Kazuyo Sejima, a Japanese architect from Ibaraki Prefecture, and has become a pride of Hitachi city. In fact, the train station has won the Good Design Awards in 2012 and the prestigious Brunel Award (under the category of Station Building) in 2014. Clean modernist elements were incorporated into its design and intelligent usage of huge glass panels transformed the train station into a viewing gallery of Pacific Ocean. Seamless connection between the train station to the seaside and city was also made possible by a spacious and transparent walkway.

Trivia. For most of us, the first thing that comes to our mind naturally when "Hitachi" is mentioned is household appliances. In fact, the headquarters of this renowned household brand was actually first established in Hitachi city and was shifted to Tokyo in 1918. Hitachi still owns offices and manufacturing plants here, and you will be able to spot them around the train station.

Limited express trains serving Hitachi Station include:
(1) Ltd Express Tokiwa ときわ
(2) Ltd Express Hitachi ひたち
Both commute along Joban line (常磐線), which connects Tokyo to Koriyama in Fukushima Prefecture. From Hitachi Station,
- train commutes southwards to Mito, Tsuchiura, Toride, Ushiku and Tokyo.
- train commutes northwards to Takahagi, and eventually to Koriyama in Fukushima Prefecture.

What's nearby?

(1) Tourist Information Center, located near Chuo Guchi (Central Exit).

(2) Bus Terminal, located just in front of Chuo Guchi (Central Exit). The main bus operator in Hitachi city is Hitachi Dentetsu Kotsu 日立電鉄交通, and attractions such as Kamine Park and Nikko Mining Museum can be assessed via bus. Unfortunately, my stay in Hitachi city was a short one ( just to stay for the night at Unoshima Villa) and I did not get to visit any places of interest here.

Japan Autumn Nov 2017 一人で日本の旅 - Omuro Keishokudo おおむろ軽食堂

Visited 13.11.2017 (Mon)

Lunch. It was about lunch time after transiting back to the foot of Omuroyama by chairlift. Decided to settle my lunch here before heading back to Izu Kogen Station. In fact, before I ascended Omuroyama earlier in the day, I was already attracted to this natural modern looking restaurant situated at the entrance of chair lift station. Though keishoku (軽食) means light meals, the food served here at Omuro Keishokudo are actually more intricate than simple snacks. Firstly, all the main courses here are accompanied by appetiser plate and dessert. There is also decent variety of rice bowls and udon to choose from the menu. For example, rice bowl topped with freshly caught shirasu (whitebait) from Usami Port or chicken marinated with soy sauce and simmered in bonito flavoured broth (とりてり丼). On the other hand, the udon noodles are served with vegetable tempura, soy sauce marinated pork or butter flavoured clams. Being a fan of fried food, I could resist not ordering their fried fish rice bowl, which happens to be one of their most popular food item on their menu. In addition to that, seafood is a specialty of Izu Peninsula because of its coastal geographical location.

Exquisite. I was already quite impressed by the outlook of the appetiser at the beginning of my lunch course. Served on a rustic ceramic tile, the appetiser was made up of five different food items which varied from day to day. Featuring seasonal and locally grown ingredients, each appetiser dish on the plate has its own distinct flavour to whet diners' appetite. The fried fish rice bowl definitely earned its place as the signature creation here. The fillets were lightly breaded and deep fried to mouth watering shade of golden brown colour. Cooked to the right texture with its moisture retained completely, I was pleasantly satisfied by the outcome of the fried fish fillets. Halfway through, I finished the rest of my rice bowl in ochazuke style, by pouring dashi over rice. I have always enjoyed ochazuke since this is quite similar to how I will soak my last bit of rice in soup/broth and eventually slurp up everything at one go back at home. Dessert was served promptly after I finished my bowl of ochazuke. Comprised of a simple sweet, pudding and a bowl of lukewarm maccha, this delectable dessert set wrapped up the entire lunch course delightfully. One other noteworthy feature of Omuro Keishokudo to pay attention to while enjoying your meal is their tablewares which are all handmade,  piece by piece, by a local pottery workshop in Ito city.

Conclusion. I have to say that I am surprised to discover such a good restaurant located in a tourist attraction and I am quite sure that the relaxing ambience and delicious food served here can/will attract a decent group of people to return on another day... solely just to enjoy a meal here!

My bill:
- Fried fish don 地魚フライ丼 - 1,566 yen (tax inclusive)

Japan Autumn Nov 2017 一人で日本の旅 - Patisserie Que Sera Sera パティスリー・ケセラセラ

Visited 12.11.2017 (Sun)

Sweet tooth. Just before I headed back to Izukyu Shimoda Station 伊豆急下田駅 after visiting Perry Road, I decided to make a detour to Patisserie Que Sera Sera to enjoy some sweets. My original plan was to fulfill my sweets cravings in one of the retro cafes lined along Perry Road ペリーロード however, the menu from several shops did not appeal to me. My last hope was Patisserie Que Sera Sera, housed in a stand-alone, modern looking and white washed building and located about 4 minutes walk away from the train station. The patisserie has also allocated a section, operating it as a cafe, for dine in customers to enjoy their sweets, accompanied with drinks here. The patisserie with a touch of European flair (Que Sera Sera means Whatever Will Be, Will Be) is opened by a couple who has previously worked in the well known sweets shop, Mont St. Clair モンサンクレール, located in the chic district of Jiyugaoka in Tokyo.

Limited period apple pie. Was already spoilt for choice by all the delicious line up of cakes in the display fridge. As I stood in front of the display fridge and could not make up my mind what to order (for quite a while), the staff directed my attention to a basket with two pieces of apple pies left and recommended me to give it a try. Initially I was unconvinced that the apple pie was a better option than the rest of delectable array of cakes but eventually gave in to the suggestion. I have to say this is one of the best apple pie I have eaten; even has as an edge over the ones I have savoured in Hirosaki on a previous trip (a city in Aomori Prefecture which is famous for apple pies). The flavours of the apple pie itself was already very well balanced; and it was further elevated by a scoop of vanilla ice cream placed on top of it. Utilising apples harvested from Aomori, the highest producing prefecture in Japan, I later found out that their apple pie is actually the most popular item in Que Sera Sera and is only available for sale between September and May. Would highly recommend to give this legendary apple pie a try if your visit to the patisserie falls within this limited period of time!

One of the best apple pies I have eaten!

Bought this Shimoda Tea Castella cake just before I left the shop. Like the cake as well - not too dense in texture and is infused with fragrant tea flavour.
