Cafe hopping. Morioka was our first pit stop of our Tohoku expedition. After safe parking our luggage at the front desk of Toyoko Inn Morioka Ekimae, we came to the bus terminal to catch the Den Den Mushi Bus. Our first objective was to locate a cafe to take a quick bite before heading for ruins of Morioka Castle. Wanted to experience the cafe culture in Morioka and handpicked two to visit. Alighted at Kencho Shiyakusho mae 県庁市役所前 and started our search for the first cafe named NOTE ノート. The cafe is located on the second floor of a shophouse, facing Sakurayama Jinja 桜山神社 and it took me a while to find out that the entrance leading to the cafe was located on the side of the building (and not the front).
Cramped yet organised. Had to squeeze through the narrow walkway before we came to the main dining area. Overall, I found the place slightly cramped as the room, apart from being occupied by several tables, was also taken up by numerous boxes containing second hand goods such as music cds, magazines, etc, which were available for sale. Despite the limited space, I would say that the area was still pretty well kept and organised; and I could sense the owner's interest in music and photography from the interior decor. We ordered chicken curry rice, toasts and coffee/tea to accompany the food. Chicken curry had the right amount of heat and was spicier than the typical Japanese curries that I have eaten before; and we all loved the crunchy and appetising pickled scallions that were served together with the curry rice. Toast was a simplified version of pizza with two different toppings. Drinks were also good and the laidback atmosphere helped to wind us down a bit after long hours of travelling in the day (red eye flight followed by transferring between trains to get from Haneda Airport to Morioka).
