Shin Aomori JR Station 新青森駅, is a train station on Ou main line 奥羽本線, Tohoku Shinkansen line 東北新幹線 and Hokkaido Shinkansen line 北海道新幹線. The train station is located in a residential district away from the heart of Aomori city and I did not manage to locate any places of interest in its vicinity. Having said that, Aomori and Shin Aomori JR Station are adjacent to each other and it takes about 5 minutes to commute between two places via train. After the commissioning of Hokkaido Shinkansen in Mar 2016, its status as the northernmost Shinkansen station in Japan was replaced by Shin Hakodate Hokuto 新函館北斗駅.
Shinkansen and limited express trains serving the train station include
(1) Hayabusa はやぶさ, commuting northwards towards Hokkaido via Hokkaido Shinkansen line, terminating at Shin Hakodate Hokuto 新函館北斗駅.
(2) Hayabusa はやぶさ, commuting southwards towards Morioka 盛岡駅, Sendai 仙台駅 and Tokyo東京駅 via Tohoku Shinkansen line.
(3) Resort Shirakami リゾートしらかみ, a limited express sightseeing train which commutes between Aomori 青森駅 and Akita 秋田駅 via Ou main line 奥羽本線 and Gono line 五能線. A total of three round trips is made per day (on most days) by a fleet of train comprised of three different themes - Buna 橅, Aoike 青池 and Kumagera くまげら. I have sat on Resort Shirakami a couple of times to explore the attractions dotted along the Gono line in 2016 and I felt that this train route which runs alongside the coast of Japan Sea is the most scenic I have taken to date. In my opinion, Aomori Prefecture is under-rated and is definitely more than a kingdom of apples, which most people would relate this place to. There are numerous scenic nature spots which are less well known and awaiting for more people to uncover. Will share more about my experience during my stay in Aomori in subsequent posts.

Named Aomori Syunmikan あおもり旬味館, this is an ideal place for passengers to kill time during the transit interval between trains or between train and bus. In May 2016 trip to explore Tohoku region once again, I alighted at Shin Aomori JR Station to transfer to the connecting JR Tohoku Bus to make my way to Oirase Keiryu. I had about 30 minutes before the arrival of the next bus and decided to search for some light snacks since I would not be having lunch upon reaching Oirase Keiryu. While walking around Syumikan, the delectable looking desserts in the display counter of Sweet Peach Cafeteria スウィートピーチカフェテリア caught my attention. After much contemplation, I chose a baked whole apple, a dessert which I had not eaten before. The effect of heat turned the apple into a stronger concentrate while the texture of the fruit became softer, with light extent of caramelisation.
